Why was it so smoky and hazy in West Lancs on Wednesday?

On Wednesday, West Lancs seemed to be quite smoky and hazy but it was not just the heat making the haze, it was intermingled with smoke. Two fires have been raging on moorlands, one in Rivington and one on Saddleworth Moor. These fires have seen smoke rise up miles in the sky and have caused people to evacuate their homes.

On Wednesday the wind shifted and sent smoke clouds over West Lancashire. NASA put out a photo which shows how far the smoke travelled. Ormskirk is approximately 51 miles from Saddleworth Moor.

A request for help from the army has seen 100 personal and a Chinnock helicopter drafted in to assist firefighters.

The fires are being monitored to make sure that they do not flare up again.
