Rivington Pike and Winter Hill on fire and smoke can be seen for milesk
Bolton Mountain Rescue Team are currently deployed along with Lancashire Fire and Rescue service and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service tackling a large moorland fire. The blaze is in the vicinity of the Pigeon Tower and Rivington Pike. People are advised to avoid the area from Pike Cottage to Lower House Car Park areas for their own safety and to allow access for emergency services who are trying to control the fire. The blaze is unpredictable and coupled with smoke inhalation can catch people out. Emergency services do not want people putting themselves or those who would be requested to assist those people at risk.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service crews are working tirelessly to bring a fire on Winter Hill under control. This is intense work due to the terrain, heat and location of fire.
Smoke from the blazes could be seen as far away as Ormskirk at 7pm and still smoke was visible at 9pm on Thursday evening. With the recent Saddleworth Moor fire slowly getting under control after 100 soldiers were deployed, let’s hope these fires are easier for the brave emergency teams to control.
