Christmas is coming up so quickly and soon it will be time for the lights to be switched on. This year Ormskirk will be having more lights than usual after winning a competition to brighten up the town.
West Lancs Borough Council have decided to move the Christmas light switch on from the traditional Friday night to a Sunday afternoon. They are also asking for market stall holders to apply to be part of the event and this may make a small Christmas market.
After the success of the Gingerbread Festival in the summer, the team planning the big switch on have had success in the fourth Annual Blachere Illumination Christmas Light Competition. This is held by Revive & Thrive Magazine and has a top prize of £10,000 worth of Christmas lights for the winning town. This was a great opportunity to showcase Ormskirk as a great place to live, work, study and visit and all the great work of the local community groups, businesses, the Chapel Gallery and Edge Hill University do, who make up the Ormskirk Town Centre Management Group.
Ormskirk was selected as a finalist and the team at West Lancashire were given the opportunity to present their case to a panel of judges, all of whom had extensive place management experience. In what was a tough competition Ormskirk was announced as the winner of the £10,000 of Christmas lights which will make a great addition to the town’s festive atmosphere.
Ronnie Brown, Managing Director of Blachere Illumination said “The quality of the presentations was extremely high and the passion that the entrants demonstrated for their towns was very impressive”.
Councillor Ian Moran Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Economic Regenerations said “This is a great win for everyone in Ormskirk and to come first ahead of other great places demonstrates how much we have to offer for local families and visitors. We are also working closely with the Concourse Centre in Skelmersdale on their exciting plans for their Christmas lights switch-on event, and are looking forward to further improvements once the first phase of the new town centre scheme is completed.”
This year the Christmas Light Switch On in Ormskirk is being planned for Sunday 25 November and interested traders can apply at Discover Ormskirk (external link).
So it looks like it could be quite a party in Ormskirk this Christmas.
